Sudanese Scholarship History

In November 2005 friends of the Sudanese refugees nestablished a scholarship fund to help them fulfill their dream of earning college degrees. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Sudanese Refugee Education Fund has distributed 181 total scholarships worth $110,425 through 9 semesters: $5,000 in grants to 16 scholars in January 2006, $7,800 to 18 scholars in August 2006, $10,075 to 23 scholars in January 2007, $7,200 to 17 scholars in May 2007, $22,200 to 30 students in August 2007, $21,050 to 27 students in December 2007, $15,500 to 20 scholars in August 2008, $10,250 to 15 students in December 2008, $11,350 to 15 students in August 2009, and $10,500 to 13 students in December 2009.

Applicants are judged according to five criteria: evidence of scholarship and strength of their academic programs, quality of answers on the application, persistence in continuing their education, financial need, and a record of community service. The amount of individual scholarships and the total number of scholarships awarded each grant cycle depends on the availability of funds. Not all applicants will receive awards.
