"Education is my father and mother." Lost Boys proverb

                        Sudanese Students Continue to Excel

After arriving in Louisville beginning in 2001 and nearly two decades after civil war forced them
to walk hundreds of miles across Africa seeking safety and shelter, the former Lost Boys and Girls
of Sudan are pursuing college degrees with enthusiasm and accomplishment. Ngor Biar Deng was
the first of the Kentucky-based refugees to graduate in 2006, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry
from the University of Louisville. He recently earned a  master's in chemical engineering at the
University of Louisville.

At least 75 scholars -- representing more than one-half of the Lost Boys and Girls who  originally
settled in Louisville -- are enrolled in or have graduated from 2- and 4-year colleges. During the 2006-07
school year, 3 scholars earned bachelor's degrees, 6 earned associate's degrees, 1 earned a diploma in
surgical technology, at least 6 started college, and 1 began graduate studies. In addition, 4 scholars made
the Dean's List at their schools, 2 were named African-American Students of Excellence, and 2 earned
degrees with Distinction.

During the 2007-08 school year, 1 student earned a master's degree, 5 students earned bachelor's
degrees, and 2 students earned associate's degrees. Five students made the Dean's List at their respective
colleges. During the 2008-09 school year, 5 students earned bachelor's degrees, 4 students earned
associate's degrees, and 2 students were named to the Dean's List at their schools.

"We have done better than expected," said James Maluak Malou, a  2009 graduate of the University of
Louisville and a board member of the Sudanese Refugee Education Fund.
