Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and the number of grants will be determined by available funding. This program is open to men and women regardless of church affiliation.

Under the direction of Principal Brother Tom Puccio, the all-boys’ school earmarked $1,020 collected by students who paid $2 each for the privilege of not wearing their uniforms for a day.

Malden Catholic is run by the Xaverian Brothers, a Catholic order started over 170 years ago for the primary purpose of educating youth.

The board of the Sudanese Refugee Education Fund and our scholarship recipients extend our heartfelt thanks to the students and administration of Malden Catholic for their continuous support of our mission.

THE DEADLINE FOR FALL 2011 SCHOLARSHIPS IS FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2011. You may download the current application at:

2011 SREF Scholarship Application

Please note the following important reminders:

All materials, including transcripts and financial data, must be received by the scholarship coordinator on or before the deadline.

Completed applications should be mailed to Sandy Milner, 203 Hidden Oak Place, Louisville, KY 40222. If you have questions, you may contact Sandy by email at 2milners@gmail.com or by phone at 502-426-6774.

All scholarship checks will be made out to the college and placed in the student’s account to pay for tuition, books, and fees.

Applicants must reside in, or have resided in, the Louisville, Kentucky region.

Students are eligible if they attend a regionally accredited school, and the board will give preference to students attending not-for-profit schools. Examples of eligible schools include all public universities, including the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Jefferson Community and Technical College, etc. and not-for-profit private schools including Bellarmine University, Transylvania University, and Spaulding University. Examples of ineligible, for-profit schools include the University of Phoenix, National College, Daymar College, and Spencerian College. We have instituted this new eligibility requirement as the result of media and legislative investigations into the for-profit school industry. Research shows that the vast majority of private, for profit schools leave students with a burdensome debt-load and record unsatisfactory graduation rates compared to not-for-profit institutions. For more information or clarification about this decision, please contact the board. More information will be available on the SREF website soon.

Applicants are judged according to five criteria: (1) evidence of scholarship and strength of the academic program, (2) quality of answers on the application, (3) persistence in continuing their education, (4) financial need, and (5) record of service. The amount of individual scholarships and the total number of scholarships awarded each grant cycle depends on the availability of funds. Not all applicants will receive awards.

The $1,732 donation is the latest in a series of contributions that have significantly replenished the SREF each year. The Sudanese Refugee Education Fund would like to offer heartfelt thanks to the entire Thomas Jefferson Unitarian congregation and to specifically note the support and sponsorship of SREF friends and board members emeritus Dick Reese, Holly Holland, and Jon Henney.
